Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Is it okay if my child has never been in a boat?

Absolutely! Our beginner classes are sailed in boats that can’t tip over which takes a lot of the scaries away. All sailors must wear life jackets and pass a short swim test to ensure they’ll be safe on the water, but that’s the only experience needed.

What does my sailor need to bring to every class?

All sailors must wear life jackets and close-toed shoes. We strongly encourage hats, sun glasses, long-sleeve shirts, and sun screen, but those are all up to you.

We’re not members of the Torch Lake Yacht Club, can we still attend classes?

Yes! TLYC has allowed the sailing school to operate on their grounds and the facilities are open to you during classes hours. Please note that the grill is not open to non-members as the kitchen can not process cash or credit cards.

I have an older child who has never sailed. What are her options?

Our beginning classes are typically for younger sailors, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to learn. For teens (and even adults) we recommend working with an instructor one-on-one in some of our larger boats that can accommodate bigger sailors. Please reach out to secure your private lessons with an instructor.

My grandchildren are only up for a short time. What would you suggest?

Enjoying family time together on the water are the moments that make a memorable life. We’d encourage you to book a private lesson with just your crew so they can make the most of their limited time with you and enjoy a new activity together.

"This winter my daughter counted down the days until she can get out on the water after having learned to sail."
